History
Mathura, birthplace of Lord Krishna (~3200 BCE), is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities. Major Kushan Empire art center (1st–3rd CE). Repeatedly attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni and Aurangzeb. Krishna Janmabhoomi was demolished and rebuilt multiple times. The temple-Shahi Idgah dispute continues in courts.
Culture & People
Heartland of Vaishnava devotion. Lathmar Holi of Barsana-Nandgaon is world-famous — women playfully beat men with lathis. Janmashtami (Aug) is the peak festival. Local food: Mathura Peda, Dubki Wale Aloo, Lassi. Braj Bhasha — language of Surdas and Mirabai — still spoken here.
