NandiGram — located 18 km from Ayodhya — is the site of one of the Ramayana's most moving chapters. When Lord Rama left for his 14-year exile, his devoted younger brother Bharat refused to accept the throne. Instead, he came here to NandiGram, placed Ram's Padukas (sandals/footwear) on the throne, wore bark clothing and slept on grass — ruling in Ram's name as a mere caretaker for 14 years. Bharatkund is the sacred pond where Bharat took his daily ritualistic dip during this penance. The site is considered the highest example of fraternal devotion in all of Hindu tradition.
NandiGram is one of the most emotionally significant sites in the Ramayana. After Kaikeyi demanded Rama's exile, Bharat — devastated by his mother's action — rushed to the forest to beg Ram to return. When Ram refused to break his vow, Bharat returned to NandiGram (not Ayodhya) and lived as a hermit for 14 years, wearing bark and sleeping on grass. He placed Ram's Padukas on the throne and administered the kingdom in Ram's name. On the day of Ram's return, Bharat ran barefoot to Ayodhya to receive him. The reunion here is called 'Bharat Milap' — one of the most celebrated moments in the epic.
NandiGram represents the highest ideal of fraternal devotion in Hindu tradition. Lord Ram himself called Bharat's sacrifice greater than his own. Pilgrims believe that a visit here resolves family disputes and strengthens sibling bonds. A dip in Bharatkund is believed to cleanse sins accumulated over many lifetimes. The soil of NandiGram is said to still carry the vibrations of Bharat's 14-year penance and the divine energy of the Bharat-Ram reunion.
